Resumo: This paper is a literature review on excessive crying and colic that affect babies during their first period of life. This text presents the clinical definition, etiology, colic associated factors and interventions to relief and treatment of infant colic. Articles published in medical and nursing journals indexed at MEDLINE and LILACS computerized database available in the libraries of BIREME, Universidade de São Paulo and CAPES homepage were analysed.

El texto aborda la definición del cuadro clínico, factores etiológicos y asociados, conductas frecuentemente adoptadas y estudiadas para el alivio y tratamiento del cólico del lactante. Fueron analizadas publicaciones de periódicos nacionales e internacionales registradas en las bases de datos informatizadas MEDLINE y LILACS, con acceso disponible en la BIREME, Bibliotecas de la Universidad de São Paulo y por el Portal de la CAPES.Trata-se de uma revisão de literatura sobre a manifestação clínica da cólica que comumente afeta os bebês na fase inicial de vida. O texto aborda a definição do quadro clínico, fatores etiológicos e associados, condutas mais adotadas e estudadas para o alívio e tratamento da cólica do lactente.
