Hospitalized newborns: the parents experience

Resumo: This paper investigates parents’ experiences during their newborns’ hospitalization. It is a qualitative study. It takes place at Neonatal Care Unit of a School Hospital in Porto Alegre. The research subjects are parents of newborns placed in this Unit. The analysis process generates three topics: “Perceiving the baby’s hospitalization as something difficult to experience”, “Living the necessity of getting support”, and “Living disease in a hospital”. The importance of this work consists of articulating the elements which are present in parents’ experiences, making possible a continuous nursing care with family valorization, specially through listening and supporting.

El estudio se desarrolla en una Unidad de Internación Neonatal de un Hospital Escuela de Porto Alegre. El proceso de análisis da origen a tres temas: “Dándose cuenta de la dificultad en vivir con la hospitalización del hijo”, “Viviendo la necesidad de recibir apoyo” y “Viviendo la enfermedad en el espacio hospitalar”. La importancia del trabajo reside en la valorización de la familia, a través del oír y apoyar.Trata-se de um estudo de natureza qualitativa que investiga a vivência dos pais durante a hospitalização de seus filhos recém-nascidos (RNs). O estudo desenvolve-se em uma Unidade de Internação Neonatal (UIN) de um Hospital Escola de Porto Alegre. Os sujeitos são pais de RNs internados nesta UIN. A análise origina três temas: “Percebendo a hospitalização do filho como algo difícil de ser vivenciado”; “Vivenciando a necessidade de receber apoio” e “Vivenciando a doença no espaço hospitalar”.
