Breast cancer: a solitary encounter with the fear of the unknown

Resumo: This is a qualitative research whose goal is to understand the experiences of women during the process of discovering breast cancer. The study involved eight college women who developed breast cancer, with ages ranging from 30 to 57 years. The comprehension of the studied phenomenon derived from Merleau-Ponty’s (1996) phenomenology and to analyze the data it was used the five steps of Giorgi’s (1985, 1997) phenomenological method, adding to them a sixth step proposed by Comiotto (1992). From this analysis, emerged two dimensions related to the essence Lonely encounter with the fear f the unknown: from the moment of finding the lump to the crucial moment of diagnosis, and experienced conflicts within the most significant relationships (husband, children and parents).

La comprensión del fenómeno en estudio se dió a partir de la fenomenologia de Merleau-Ponty (1996) y para el análisis de las informaciones utilicé cinco pasos del método fenomenológico de Giorgi (1985, 1987), crescentando un sexto paso propuesto por Comiotto (1992). Del análisis de informaciones emergieron dos dimensiones relacionadas a la esencia “Encuentro Solitario” con el temor de lo desconocido: del descubrimiento del nódulo al momento crucial del diagnóstico y conflictos vivenciados en las relaciones más significantes: maridos, hijos, padres.Trata-se de uma pesquisa de cunho qualitativo que tem como objetivo compreender as vivências de mulheres no processo da descoberta do câncer de mama. O estudo envolveu oito mulheres universitárias que desenvolveram câncer de mama, com idade entre 30 a 57 anos. A compreensão do fenômeno em estudo deuse a partir da fenomenologia de Merleau-Ponty (1996) e, para análise das informações, utilizou-se dos cinco passos do método fenomenológico de Giorgi (1985, 1997), acrescido de um sexto passo proposto por Comiotto (1992).
