Resumo: | This paper was written using data collected to characterize the labor force of nursing and its developed practices on a major project called “Project of Classification of Nursing Practices in Collective Health in Brazil”. The study took place at the Sanitary Districts V and VI of Porto Alegre. The data was collected in 1998, through the application of two forms. They were completed by 28 nurses, 6 nursing technicians, and 101 nursing aids. The results show that nurses develop administrative activities, while nursing technicians and nursing aids support medical actions, those activities being considered insufficient to the development of the Nursing Practice in Collective Health. |

El entorno del estudio fueron los districtos sanitários V y VI de Porto Alegre. Fueron aplicados dos formularios a 28 enfermeros, 6 tecnicos y 101 auxiliares de enfermería en el año de 1998. Los resultados muestran que los enfermeros realizan actividades administrativas, mientras los técnicos y auxiliares de enfermería ofrecen suporte al atendimiento médico, siendo estas actividades insuficientes para el desarollo de la práctica de Enfermería en Salud ColectivaEste trabalho foi realizado a partir da caracterização da força de trabalho e das práticas desenvolvidas pelo pessoal de enfermagem do Projeto de Classificação das Práticas de Enfermagem em Saúde Coletiva no Brasil. O estudo foi realizado nos distritos sanitários V e VI de Porto Alegre. Foram aplicados dois formulários a 28 enfermeiros, 6 técnicos e 101 auxiliares de enfermagem, no ano de 1998.
