Resumo: | It is about a descriptive qualitative study, with the objective of knowing the perceptions and meanings which the patients give to the diagnosis and life with HIV/AIDS. Thirteen patients were interviewed that are ambulatory service users in STD/AIDS in the city of Florianópolis. The data was analyzed by the analysis method of content, resulting into the following categories: The AIDS diagnosis on the public and living with AIDS: New concepts regarding the disease, The results showed, after analyzed, that the HIV diagnosis causes sadness, fear and the death sentence feeling. The fear to reveal your condition to the family and friends is mostly caused by society’s prejudice, which is a result that HIV is connected with stereotypes. The maintenance of health and physical integrity allows it to realize that AIDS is not a deadly disease, and that indeed it’s possible to live well. |

The maintenance of health and physical integrity allows it to realize that AIDS is not a deadly disease, and that indeed it’s possible to live well.Se trata de un estudio de naturaleza descriptiva y cualitativa, cuyo objetivo es el de conocer las percepciones y los significados que los pacientes atribuyen al diagnóstico y a la convivencia con el VHI/SIDA. Para la investigación fueron entrevistados trece pacientes del ambulatorio en DST/Sida de Florianópolis. Los datos fueron analizados por medio de análisis de contenido, produciendo las categorías: descubrimiento del diagnóstico positivo; enfrentamiento social: el diagnóstico del sida en el contexto público; la convivencia con el sida: nuevas concepciones en relación a enfermedad. El diagnóstico positivo produce tristeza, miedo y sentimiento de finitud. El temor de revelar su condición de seropositivo a la familia y a la red de relaciones. El mantenimiento de la salud y de la integridad física permite que se perciba que el sida no es una enfermedad letal y que es posible vivir bien.Trata-se de estudo de natureza descritiva qualitativa, com objetivo de conhecer as percepções e os significados que os pacientes atribuem ao diagnóstico e convívio com o HIV/Aids. Foram entrevistados treze pacientes usuários de serviço ambulatorial em DST/AIDS do município de Florianópolis. Os dados foram analisados pelo método da análise de conteúdo, resultando nas categorias: descoberta da positividade; enfrentamento do social: diagnóstico da aids no contexto público; e convivência com aids: novas concepções em relação à doença. Nos resultados verificamos que o diagnóstico provoca tristeza, medo e sensação de finitude. O receio de revelar sua condição a família e rede de relações se dá pelo preconceito, que é produto da doença ligada a estigmas e estereótipos.
