Resumo: The objective of this qualitative study was to understand the meaning of Intensive Care Unit (ITU) hospitalization for the patients’ relatives. From April to December 2003, 16 relatives of patients admitted in the ICU of a teaching hospital in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, were interviewed. From the thematic analysis emerged the following categories: the admission to the ICU; the impact of separation and family feelings of impotence; lack of consideration and reduced number of visits; patient’s lack of privacy. Neglect and lack of consideration towards the patients´ relatives by intensive care professionals were observed.

Fueron entrevistados, desde abril hasta diciembre del 2003, 16 familiares de pacientes internados en la UCI general de un hospital de enseñanza, en el interior del estado de Rio Grande do Sul. Del análisis temático emergieron las categorías: la admisión a la UCI; el impacto de la separación y la “impotencia familiar”; la falta de consideración y las visitas reducidas; la falta de intimidad del paciente. Se observó falta de consideración hacia los familiares por parte de los profesionales de la Unidad de Cuidados IntensivosEste estudo qualitativo objetivou compreender o significado da internação em Unidade de Terapia Intensiva (UTI) para os familiares dos pacientes. Foram entrevistados, de abril a dezembro de 2003, 16 familiares de pacientes internados na UTI geral de um hospital do interior do estado do Rio Grande do Sul. Da análise temática emergiram as categorias: a admissão na UTI; o impacto do desligamento e a “impotência familiar”; o pouco acolhimento e as visitas reduzidas; a falta de privacidade do paciente.
