Resumo: Laryngectomy causes functional and esthetic lesions on the patients, and therefore they need emotional support to resume their activities. This exploratory descriptive study, with a qualitative approach, was developed with 16 elderly patients of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, submitted to complete laryngectomy, with the aim of collecting their experience after the surgery. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews. The thematic analysis allowed building the following categories possible to be built: identity loss, social isolation, and communication difficulties. The change in body image and communication difficulties contribute for the elderly perception of social exclusion, being a burden to the family, and concern with the future. Limitations resulting from surgery and from changes in body image result in emotional and social fragility, which can be minimized by the support of interdisciplinary interventions.

Debido a ello, estas personas necesitan respaldo emocional para retomar sus actividades. Este estudio descriptivo exploratorio, con enfoque cualitativo, se desarrolló con 16 pacientes adultos mayores sometidos a laringectomía total, del interior del estado de Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil. El objetivo fue conocer las experiencias vividas por los adultos mayores laringectomizados. Fue aplicado, individualmente, un instrumento con preguntas abiertas. El análisis temático hizo posible elaborar las categorías: aislamiento social, pérdida de la identidad debido a la imagen corporal modificada, dificultades de comunicación. El cambio en la imagen corporal y las dificultades de comunicación contribuyen a que se produzca una percepción de exclusión social de los ancianos, de peso para la familia y de preocupación con el futuro. Las limitaciones resultantes del proceso quirúrgico en los adultos mayores laringectomizados y de la imagen corporal modificada podrán reducirse a través de un respaldo mínimo y de la ayuda interdisciplinaria.O impacto causado pela laringectomia no paciente leva a lesões funcionais e estéticas. Por isso, essas pessoas necessitam de suporte emocional para retomar suas atividades. Este estudo exploratório descritivo, com abordagem qualitativa foi desenvolvido com 16 pacientes idosos do interior do Rio Grande do Sul, submetidos à laringectomia total. O objetivo do estudo foi conhecer as experiências vividas pelos idosos laringectomizados. Para a coleta de dados realizou-se entrevista semi-estruturada. A análise temática possibilitou construir as categorias: perda da identidade, isolamento social e dificuldades de comunicação. A mudança na imagem corporal e as dificuldades de comunicação contribuem para a percepção da exclusão social dos idosos, de peso à família e preocupação com o futuro.
