Resumo: Fathers have increasingly participated in child care. The objective of this study was to identify the perceptions of the nursing staff as the presence of the father as a caregiver in pediatric units. A qualitative, descriptive, and exploratory study was conducted during the first semester of 2005 in a pediatric unit of a university hospital in Brazil. Four nurses and fifteen orderlies were interviewed using semi-structured interviews, and data were submitted to thematic analysis. The results showed that the team believed that children need both the mother and the father, but the lack of space does not allow the presence of both. The nursing team also believes that mothers take better care of the children than fathers. Fathers are only accepted as caregivers in the hospital under special situations. It was concluded that the nursing team needs to think in how to help fathers to experience and to practice participatory fatherhood in pediatric wards.

Se tuvo como objetivo identificar las percepciones del equipo de enfermería acerca de la presencia del padre como cuidador en unidades pediátricas. Se realizó un estudio cualitativo descriptivo, exploratorio, en el primer semestre de 2005 en una unidad pediátrica de un hospital universitario en el sur del país. Los sujetos fueron cuatro enfermeras y quince asistentes de enfermería. Se hicieron entrevistas semiestructuradas y los datos fueron analizados por el análisis temático. De acuerdo a lo que constató el equipo, el niño necesita tanto de la madre como del padre en el hospital, pero el área física es un fuerte impedimento para la presencia de ambos. Según los profesionales, la madre cuida mejor que el padre y este sólo es aceptado como cuidador en el hospital en situaciones especiales. Se llegó a la conclusión que la enfermería necesita reflexionar sobre cómo ayudar a los padres a experimentar y practicar la paternidad participativa en la unidad Pediatría.A participação do pai no cuidado da criança vem aumentando. Objetivou-se identificar as percepções da equipe de enfermagem acerca da presença do pai como cuidador em unidades pediátricas. Foi realizado um estudo qualitativo descritivo, exploratório, no primeiro semestre de 2005 em uma unidade de pediatria de um hospital universitário do sul do país. Os sujeitos foram quatro enfermeiras e 15 auxiliares de enfermagem. Realizou-se entrevistas semi-estruturadas e os dados foram analisados pela análise temática. Verificou-se que, para a equipe, a criança precisa tanto da mãe como do pai no hospital, mas a área física é um forte impedimento para a presença de ambos. Segundo os profissionais, a mãe cuida melhor que o pai, e este só é aceito como cuidador no hospital em situações especiais.
