HIV screening and counseling in antenatal care: perception of postpartum women

Resumo: This transversal and exploratory study aimed at verifying if pregnant women were receiving antenatal counseling before and after HIV screening. The sample consisted of 161 postpartum HIV-negative women admitted to two maternity hospitals in the city of São Paulo. Interviews were carried out in 2003. Data showed that the number of postpartum women who received pre and post HIV screening counseling during pregnancy was low. The answers of women on the aim of HIV testing were statistically correlated to the average number of prenatal appointments. In conclusion, this study identified the need of a higher involvement of health staff workers in pre- and post-HIV screening counseling of pregnant women during prenatal care.

La muestra estuvo compuesta por 161 puérperas negativas para VIH, entrevistadas en dos maternidades del municipio de São Paulo, en 2003. Fue posible constatar que durante la gestación se redujeron las orientaciones pre y posexamen anti-VIH; los resultados son estadísticamente significativos en relación con la finalidad del examen anti-VIH y al promedio de consultas prenatales. Se concluye que hay necesidad de que los profesionales del área de la salud estén más comprometidos a brindar información pre y pos examen anti-VIH a las gestantes durante el período prenatal.Este estudo exploratório, de corte transversal, verificou se as mulheres têm recebido aconselhamento pré e pós-teste anti-HIV no pré-natal. A amostra constou de 161 puérperas soronegativas entrevistadas em duas maternidades do município de São Paulo, em 2003. Verificou-se que, na gravidez, foi reduzido o oferecimento de aconselhamento pré e pós-teste anti-HIV; houve significância estatística quando se consideraram as afirmações das puérperas sobre a finalidade do teste anti-HIV e a média de consultas de pré-natal.
