Resumo: The aim of this study was to understand the lived phenomenon of relatives having a patient hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit. It was conducted using the phenomenological approach in the modality of the situated phenomenon. Ten family members of patients interned in intensive care unit of a private hospital in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte were interviewed from March to July of 2006. Five thematic categories emerged from the analysis that constituted the elements of the lived experience: Fear of the patient’s death; Absence of humanization; Social isolation; Trust in intensive care unit; and Personal life overloaded. With the phenomenon revealed, it was possible to subsidize the construction of a humanized care approach that considers the patient's family.

Como referencial ha sido adoptada la fenomenología, en la modalidad de fenómeno situado. Han sido entrevistados 10 familiares de pacientes internados en la UCI, de marzo a julio de 2006, en un hospital particular de la ciudad de Natal, Rio Grande do Norte. De los discursos, surgieron cinco categorías temáticas que han constituido los componentes de la experiencia: Miedo de la muerte del familiar; Ausencia de humanización; Aislamiento social; Confianza en la UCI; Sobrecarga en la vida personal. Desvelado el fenómeno, ha sido posible obtener elementos para construir un cuidado humanizado que contemplara la familia del paciente.O propósito deste estudo foi compreender o fenômeno vivido pelos familiares durante a internação do seu parente na Unidade de Terapia Intensiva (UTI). Teve como referencial a fenomenologia, na modalidade do fenômeno situado. Foram entrevistados 10 familiares de pacientes internados na UTI, de março a julho de 2006, em um hospital da rede privada de Natal, Rio Grande do Norte. Dos discursos, emergiram cinco categorias temáticas que constituíram os elementos da vivência: Medo da morte do familiar; Ausência de humanização; Isolamento social; Confiança na UTI; Sobrecarga na vida pessoal.
