Resumo: This study´s objective was to identify the repercussion of the diagnosis of metabolic syndrome in the life of those who suffer from that disease. It was an exploratory-descriptive research with qualitative approach, carried out with 18 people randomly selected, who have the disease in the city of Vanini, Rio Grande do Sul, Br azil. Data were collected by means of semi-structured individual inter views in April, 2007. The analysis technique was used to examine the inter view contents. The following categories were elaborated: meaning of diagnosis, feeding reeducation, change in life style, integration in groups, disposition and well-being. Through this study it was possible to observe that metabolic syndrome patients need health professionals to provide continuous support, follow up and guidance in order to strengthen their autonomy and enhance patient´s responsibility

Los datos se tomaron por medio de entrevista semiestructurada durante el mes de abril de 2007. El contenido de las entrevistas fue tratado con la técnica de análisis temático. Se elaboraron las siguientes categorías: significado del diagnóstico, reeducación alimentaria, cambio en el estilo de vida, integración en grupos, disposición y bienestar. Este trabajo permitió que se notara que los portadores de síndrome metabólico necesitan continuar teniendo apoyo, seguimiento y orientación, fortaleciendo la autonomía y estimulando la adquisición de responsabilidad de cada portador.Estudo exploratório-descritivo, com abordagem qualitativa, realizado no município de Vanini, Rio Grande do Sul, tendo como objetivo identificar a repercussão do diagnóstico de síndrome metabólica na vida de seus portadores. Foram selecionados 18 sujeitos de forma aleatória. Os dados foram coletados por meio de entrevista semi-estruturada no mês de abril de 2007. O conteúdo das entrevistas foi tratado com a técnica da análise temática.
