Resumo: This article aims at understanding what the friend and friendship represent for the elderly in the context of the geriatric home. One utilized the qualitative approach while the techniques for data collection were: thematic interview and indirect participant observation. The collection period was from April to June 2003, in a geriatric home located in the city of Salvador, Bahia. 15 elderly subjects were interviewed. The used analysis was of thematic contents. We understood that the definition of friend and friendship for the institutionalized elderly is associated with his shortages in the life of the geriatric home. One comes to the conclusion that the friendship relations established transcend ages, cultures and physical conditions

Se utilizó el abordaje cualitativo mientras las técnicas para recolección de los datos fueron: entrevista temática y observación participante indirecta. El periodo de la recolección fue de abril a junio de 2003 en una instituición para ancianos, localizada en la ciudad de Salvador, Bahia. Se entrevistó 15 ancianos. El análisis usado fue de contenidos temáticos. Nosotros entendimos que la definición de amigo y amistad para el anciano institucionalizado está asociada a sus carencias en la vida de la clínica geriátrica. Se concluye que las relaciones de amistad establecidas transcienden edades, culturas y condiciones físicas.Este artigo objetiva compreender o que é, para o idoso asilado, o amigo e a amizade no contexto asilar. Utilizouse abordagem qualitativa e as técnicas para coleta dos dados foram: entrevista temática e observação participante indireta. O período de coleta foi de abril a junho de 2003, em uma residência geriátrica, situada na cidade de Salvador, Bahia. Entrevistaram-se 15 idosos. A análise utilizada foi a de conteúdos temáticos. Compreendemos que a definição de amigo e amizade para o idoso institucionalizado está associada às suas carências na vida asilar.
