Resumo: It is a qualitative study with the objective of identifying the man’s perception regarding the changes that took place in his marital relationship during the child’s breast-feeding. The data were collected through interview with 13 fathers. The results indicate that men develop attitudes and feelings relative to the son and the wife; they recognize that the alterations in their marital relationship are more evident during the first three months of the child’s life and they try to understand or to demonstrate indifference towards the changes. Although breastfeeding results in modifications in the spouses’ relationship, the fathers do not consider them as something negative in their lives.

Los datos fueron recolectados por entrevista con 13 padres. Los resultados informan que los hombres desarrollan actitudes y sentimientos relativos al hijo y a la compañera; ellos reconocen que las alteraciones en su relación conyugal son más evidentes en los primeros tres meses de vida del niño y procuran entender o demostrar indiferencia con los cambios. Aunque el amamantamiento desencadena modificaciones en la relación conyugal, los padres no las consideran como algo negativo en sus vidas.Estudo qualitativo que teve o objetivo de identificar a percepção do homem acerca das mudanças ocorridas no seu relacionamento conjugal durante a lactação do filho. Os dados foram coletados através de entrevista junto a 13 pais. Os resultados apontam que os homens desenvolvem atitudes e sentimentos relativos ao filho e à companheira; reconhecem que as alterações no seu relacionamento conjugal são mais evidentes nos três primeiros meses de vida da criança e tentam compreender ou demonstram indiferença frente às mudanças.
