The representations of spaces in Paris, in their social diversity, were notably developed in French-language literature from the beginning of the 19th century. The city's bohemian and artistic experiences have been privileged themes in prose ever since. This paper analyzes the representations of spaces in Paris in Black Bazar, a novel by Alain Mabanckou published in 2009. We use the concept of space proposed by Milton Santos in A Natureza do Espaço: Técnica e Tempo, Razão e Emoção, to show how social uses participate in its definition. We observe the way in which Mabanckou's novel updates and diversifies representations of Paris in relation to the literary canon, bringing Négritude and its legacy to think about race, class, culture and language in contemporary spaces in the capital of France.
