This research revisits the acquisition of CCV branching onset syllables (Consonant1+Consonant2+Vowel) in Brazilian Portuguese, investigating how the liquid segments in CCV are specified throughout childhood development. A mispronunciation detection task compared the segmental and structural influence on the detection of C[ɾ]V↔C[l]V and [ɾ]V↔[l]V. The results show high substitution detection in conditions like 'ga/l/inha'→'ga[ɾ]inha' and 'co/ɾ/uja'→ 'co[l]uja', but not 'b/l/usa' →'b[ɾ]usa', as well as 'p/ɾ/ato'→'p[l]ato' in comparison to 'b/l/usa'→'b[ɾ]usa', even when the child speech bare C[ɾ]V↔C[l]V substitutions. Children had no contact with rotacizing dialects. Based on the Contrastive Hierarchy of Features (DRESHER, 2003), we argue that initially there is no specification of the contrast between C/l/V and C/ɾ/V, although this segmental contrast is already established in a CV context. This argument is supported by the skewed distributional pattern and low functional load between C/ɾ/V-C/l/V, which, in opposition to the balanced frequency and the high informativeness of the contrast /l, r/ in CV, lead to a delay (or contextual neutralization) of the feature opposition. Thus, there is a moment in child development when the contrast between liquids depends on their position in the syllable structure, pointing out that the contrastive hierarchy of features has to consider contextual information in its construction
