The Argentinean economy experienced an extraordinary economic growth in the 19th century, when its characteristic was its aggregation to the international market, the Belle Époque period, by products, labor and capital. The financial and banking activities themselves were also characteristics of that period. The private banks in the country very much influenced the system’s behavior, the activities of the Baring Brothers and the adoption of the gold standard. The Baring Brothers crisis of 1890, was unleashed by the lack of trust in the Argentinean bonds and shares on the part of the English investors, and by the size of the foreign debt. This paper consists of two segments. The first segment analyzes the beginning of banking activities in the country and the Baring Brothers crisis. The second describes the evolution of foreign debt and deals: the Rothschild Committee of 1891, the Romero Deal of 1893 and the Terry Deal of 1896.
