Resumo: This paper examines some classic ideas about the origins of regional inequality and the tools of policy usually recommended to promote more balanced growth from a spatial view point, reconciling efficiency (greater growth) and equity (better distribution). The work provides an examination of growth poles theory, Myrdal's theory of circular and cumulative causation, the origin and state of regional inequality in Brazil, and studies the Kuznets' hypothesis and the possible presence of the polarization reversal process in this Country.
