Resumo: Can the salmon industry use intensively natural resources become sustainable? What is the role of the institutions? The study addresses these questions through the analysis of the Chilean experience in regions Los Lagos and Aysén (southern Chile), during four decades. Supported by documentation and literature on the salmon industry, Chilean government policies, legislation, and interviews with different actors from both public and private sectors, the study documents the transition to a sustainable industry, demonstrating that institutional change and institutions have a key role for sustainable development.

Con el apoyo de documentación y literatura sobre la industria del salmón, las políticas de los gobiernos chilenos y la legislación, y entrevistas a distintos actores tanto del sector público como privado, el estudio documenta el proceso de una transición hacia una industria sustentable, demostrando que el cambio institucional y las instituciones tienen un papel clave para el desarrollo sustentable.Pode a indústria do salmão usar intensivamente os recursos naturais para se tornar sustentável?
