Resumo: This text discusses the formation of an autonomous literary system as part of the upcoming functional society around 1800. Following the theoretical framework developed by the German sociologist Niklas Luhmann, the writer gives a brief historical overview of pre-modern social structure and art concepcions. Then he focusses on the attemps of the romantic period to reflect the loss of external references as a consequence of society's differentiation into autopoetic systems and to redifine it's own specific literary forms as conscious observations which oscilate between external references and self-references.
