Resumo: Operíodo que vai do final do século XVIII até a chegada dos primeiros imigrantes europeus não ibéricos, ou seus descendentes,no início do século XX,na região Noroeste do Rio Grande do Sul (Brasil) é escassamente analisado com o uso da teoria dos sistemas agrários. Frente a esse contexto, o presente estudo tem por objetivo caracterizar as distintas configurações agrárias e analisar as causas das transformações ocorridas na agricultura dessa região,desde a ocupação exclusivamente indígena até o período imediatamente anterior à modernização da agricultura,na década de 1960. Com base na teoria dos sistemas agrários reconstituiu-se a evolução e a diferenciação da agricultura ao longo desse tempo,identificando-se a existência de três sistemas agrários, denominados indígena,caboclo e colonial.Além de analisar suas configurações, o artigo discute as causas do declínio de cada um dos referidos sistemas.
