Resumo: The article focuses on the movement of occupied schools that took place in numerous secondary education centers in Porto Alegre (Brazil) during 2016; there, beyond calling for the right to quality education, student participation fostered a process of community empowerment based on ethical, civic and political competence. In this way, the learning processes helped to broaden the vision of education, crossing the boundaries of the school as an institution through the implementation of initiatives and/or experiences that led to the transformation of society.
