Resumo: The main events related to the life of James V. Neel, one of the most important geneticists of the last decades, are presented, especially with reference to the influence he exerted in Latin America. Documentation is provided on the field work he performed in Brazil, and on the results of the joint Ann Arbor-Porto Alegre program of research.
