Resumo: This paper has as starting point the idea that there is a link to be established between history of image and history of art to define historically the concept of art. This link can be situated on the contemporary intellectual debate of two approaches. The first one, states that image is an issue of a particular disciplinary field that can be recognized as an Anglo-Saxon approach; the second characterized as a German approach, treats image as a central problematic to define the disciplinary field of history of art. Thus, the renewing interest on image and art studies involves different views with consequences for their disciplinary definition.

Esse laço pode ser situado no debate intelectual contemporâneo a partir de duas abordagens. Uma primeira, que afirma a imagem como objeto de um campo disciplinar particular, que demarca uma abordagem anglo-saxã; e uma segunda, caracterizada como abordagem germânica, trata a imagem como problema central para definir o campo disciplinar da história da arte.
