Resumo: Based on the idea that the decriminalization of abortion in Brazil is made impossible by religious interference in the field of politics, the purpose of this article is to analyze how this interference took place in the context of the National Constituent Assembly (ANC) – from February 1, 1987 to 22 of July, 1988. As a methodology, the work uses documental historical research, with the analysis of sources found in newspapers available in the Hemeroteca Digital of Biblioteca Nacional. This analysis is based on two axes: the first centered on the performance of religious groups; the other focused on the participation of women in the Constituent Assembly. The main argument is the importance of this scenario for understanding the tensions that are still present in the debate on the decriminalization of abortion in Brazil.

Como metodologia, o trabalho utiliza a pesquisa histórica documental, com o uso de fontes encontradas em jornais disponíveis na Hemeroteca Digital da Biblioteca Nacional.
