Resumo: The consolidation of Brazilian party system between 1945-64 took place during Vargas administration (1951-54), having as the major reference the president’s personality and performance. After the August 1954 crisis, a moderate party system arises, with the PSD strongly installed at the political-ideological center as the guarantee of political stability, attracting the extremes (PTB and UDN) as a compromise with democracy. The construction of Brazilian party system’s identity and emancipation is a legacy of Getúlio Vargas, and it required at large the surpassing of his own figure of statesman.
