Resumo: | From a historiographical and comparative perspective, the article analyzes the Borbonic and Pombaline reforms. These interventions originated from disputes between European monarchies and altered the pact between the kings and their overseas subjects. They also provoked revolts led by different sectors of society, but these reactions differed widely in the Americas. Reforms and revolts have raised economic and political pressures overseas and made social conflicts clearer. Previously little used, the term "colony” has become fundamental to understand the links between monarchies and overseas possessions. In addition to producing raw materials on a large scale, the colonies stood out for their miscegenation and racial conflicts |
