Resumo: In the Portuguese context, the inhabitants of the Atlantic islands proved to be, more than once, a vital resource for the monarchy in order to people and to defend other peripheral areas of the Portuguese empire. In this article, we present the broad lines of Portuguese settlement in northern (Pará and Maranhão) and southern (Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul) Brazil. This was made with settlers — the “couples” — and soldiers born in the Azores, a process that came to an end only with the independence of Brazil.

Neste artigo, apresentamos as linhas gerais do povoamento do Norte (Pará e Maranhão) e do Sul (Santa Catarina e Rio Grande do Sul) do Brasil nos séculos XVII e XVIII com recurso a levas de colonos — os “casais” — e de recrutas originários dos Açores, um processo apenas interrompido pela independência do Brasil.UFRGS2011-11-01info:eu-repo/semantics/articleinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersionapplication/pdfhttps://seer.ufrgs.br/index.php/anos90/article/view/1757710.22456/1983-201X.17577Anos 90; Vol. 17 No. 32 (2010); 17-43Anos 90; v. 17 n. 32 (2010); 17-431983-201X0104-236Xreponame:Anos 90 (Online)instname:Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS)instacron:UFRGS-30porhttps://seer.ufrgs.br/index.php/anos90/article/view/17577/14044Rodrigues, José Damiãoinfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccess2023-01-12T17:04:12Zoai:seer.ufrgs.br:article/17577Revistahttps://seer.ufrgs.br/anos90PUBhttps://seer.ufrgs.br/anos90/oaianos90@ufrgs.br||1983-201X0104-236Xopendoar:2023-01-12T17:04:12Anos 90 (Online) - Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS)false
