From social critics to biotipology: contributions on history of criminology in Rio de Janeiro during the 1930s

Resumo: This paper aims at analyzing the history and scientific status of criminology in Rio de Janeiro in the 1930s. From the investigation of the discourses and debates carried out by members of the Brazilian Society of Criminology, we try to understand the meanings attributed by that argumentative community to the “science of crime”, especially with regard to the root causes of the criminal phenomenon, as well as its role in social reordering. It was concluded that, in that context, criminology was seen as some knowledge in construction, a field to which various disciplines converged and one that is considered fundamental in the civilizational task of explaining and fighting against crime.
