Resumo: The article discusses research traditions and theoretical conceptions of Christian spiritual kinship (godparenting and co-parenthood). It analyzes elements that are pertinent from the perspective of those who study this phenomenon in slaver Brazil present precisely in works that do not study that context. The central argument is that, by changing the focus of analysis and looking at external production, new questions and working hypotheses can be raised, to renew this field of studies. Looking at external production points tothe importance of considering the meaning of these social ties for those who engendered them in different contexts and the dynamism of the possible forms and uses of these relationships. These two aspects, in general, have been ignored by the historiography regarding the spiritual kinship in slaver Brazil.

Analisa elementos que são pertinentes a partir da perspectiva de quem estuda esse fenômeno no Brasil escravista presentes em trabalhos que não estudam o referido contexto. O argumento central é que, mudando o foco de análise e olhando para a produção exterior, pode-se levantar novas perguntas e hipóteses de trabalho, de modo a renovar esse campo de estudos. O olhar para a produção externa aponta para a importância de se considerar qual o significado desses laços sociais para aqueles que os engendravam em diferentes contextos, assim como o dinamismo existente nas formas e usos possíveis dessas relações.
