HISTORY IN TIMES OF CULTURE WARS: THE PAST OF THE AMERICAN WEST AND THE PUBLIC STRUGGLE TO DEFINE AMERICA IN THE 1980s AND 1990s

Resumo: During the decades of 1980 and 1990, the United States were the stage to intense “culture wars”. One of privileged battlefields in this struggle to define America was the public debate regarding the past of the American West and its significance for that turbulent present. Thus, in that context, rival narratives fought for legitimacy in the public space, with the American West becoming a synecdoche for the whole nation. The article aims to unveil some of these meanings, with a special emphasis on its political significance.

Um dos campos de batalha privilegiados nesta luta para definir a América foi o debate público acerca do passado do Oeste norte-americano e seus significados para aquele conturbado presente. Desta maneira, naquela conjuntura, narrativas rivais lutavam por legitimidade no espaço público, com o Oeste tornando-se a sinédoque da nação.
