Resumo: The article analyzes the strike of 1960, the chemical workers of state enterprise, Companhia Nacional de Alcalis – CNA, along with salt workers in Cabo Frio, on the northern coast of Rio de Janeiro, especially the meaning of solidarity. With references to populism, to labour and the unions, we argue from the reduction of scale, referenced by a case study, be able to recover workers' experiences and strategies, perceived in its active participation as subjects of history, opposing the idea of subjection or protection to the state.
