Visions about the Empire: discourses about the African continent on the covers of Visão História Magazine, Portugal (2008-2020)

The essay analyzes the speeches and representations about the African continent on the covers of the editions of the Portuguese magazine Visão História, published between the years 2008 and 2020. The results obtained, referenced by African and cultural studies, identified the existence of two hegemonic discursive axes. The first reveals that the periodical reinforced the Portuguese colonial imagination by concentrating its reports on themes such as the “setting up of the “Portuguese Empire”, the “Colonial Exhibitions” and the “Colonial War”. The second discursive axis comprises the approaches that associate Africa with slavery and the representations of Africans as members of primitive societies and in the condition of colonized and enslaved. These ideas are reinserted in the readers’ daily lives and (re) produce negative and inferiorization discourses of the continent and its populations.
