Resumo: | The paper explores the way as different processes and actors work on collective memories, focusing specifically on relations between regionalism and national identity at Rio Grande do Sul. Retaking opposed positions referring to the “weight” of the Missões in the local memory, it examines official and alternative representations of gaucho traditions. Both are linked to a regional discourse, endorsed by State’s action in its relations with intellectuals on one hand, and on the other hand by citizens identified with popular art and traditionalism. Finally, this text points out the interdependence relations between History and Memory, considering that the knowledge of the struggles for controlling cultural identities allows to place the issue of social identity of historians, and their differents historiographic styles. |
