Resumo: This article proposes a model of analysis of indigenous leadership based on the reconstruction of social situations. Taking as a case the context of Jesuit *reducciones* of Guarani, the article analyses the transformations of native power over the long-term. The fi rst part describes the formation of a new political organization emphasizing the relations between mission ethnogenesis and the institution of political fi gures of indigenous leaders - the “caciques” and “cabildantes”- that participated of mission government. The second part analyzes the participation of indigenous leaders in three critical situations of the history of reducciones: the Guarani war, the Jesuits’ expulsion and the post-jesuit period. In a broader framework of rearrangements of the political and institutional map of the reducciones and the Colonial State, each of these situations constitutes a complex context in which power relations are reconfi gured and native agency shaped.

No. 34 (2011): Dossiê História Indígena na América; 19-54Anos 90; v. 18 n. 34 (2011): Dossiê História Indígena na América; 19-541983-201X0104-236Xreponame:Anos 90 (Online)instname:Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS)instacron:UFRGS-30porhttps://seer.ufrgs.br/index.php/anos90/article/view/26266/19718Wilde, Guillermoinfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccess2023-01-12T17:04:12Zoai:seer.ufrgs.br:article/26266Revistahttps://seer.ufrgs.br/anos90PUBhttps://seer.ufrgs.br/anos90/oaianos90@ufrgs.br||1983-201X0104-236Xopendoar:2023-01-12T17:04:12Anos 90 (Online) - Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS)false
