Resumo: Originally published in 1950, the present essay by Arnaldo Momigliano became a landmark on the study of the history of historical writing. In it, the Italian historian makes the case for the modern antiquarian. The antiquarian, Momigliano states, gave shape to the basic principles of the modern historical method, which was later appropriated by the historian in their practice. The work of the antiquarians would have resulted on the development of a set of rules and procedures that helped sustain the relevance and even the very possibility of historical knowledge when it was put amidst the skeptical debates that grassed over the end of the seventeenth century and the beginning of the eighteenth century. Even though it may now be subject to a number of revisions, Momigliano’s essay – which is here being published for the first time in Brazil – is an reference to the study of the making of the field of historiography and it also helped shed some light over figures sometimes forgotten by the historian, such as the main character of these pages, the antiquarian.
