The rhetoric of naturalness: the homeland of Felipe Camarão as a historiographic problem

The naturalness of the Felipe Camarão was object of controversy during century XIX. Many inztellectuals scattered throughout the country, such as: José de Alencar, Francisco Adolfo de Varnhagen, Antonio Joaquim de Mello, among others, produced texts about the controversy around the place where Felipe Camarão was born. Far from being univocal, the debate was fierce. Documents and arguments were drawn up by the lawyers involved in the quarrel, whose purpose was to prove the Indian’s belonging to a given province. This effort of convincing and argumentative strategy on the part of some Brazilian intellectuals, took to what we call rhetoric of the naturalness. The objective of this article is to analyze this discursive engineering from the examination of the texts of two literates of the nineteenth century who dedicated themselves to the problem: Antônio Joaquim de Mello and Francisco Adolfo de Varnhagen.
