““So That We Can Be What We Are”: memories on the Gay Movement of Alfenas in the process of fighting for LGBT citizens’ rights (2000-2018)

The article intends to present part of the research that was born from the dialogue with members of the Gay Movement of Alfenas (MGA), founded in the year 2000, in the south of Minas Gerais. The organization has been active in the defense of human rights, in legal issues and in cultural and political manifestations, fighting against prejudice on the part of society that is unaware of its history of struggle and its achievements. In negotiation with its members, a survey was developed of photographic, film and written records, as well as listening in semi-structured interviews, about their experiences in LGBT militancy. This text seeks to present part of the collective memory expressed through the oral history of life of four of its oldest members, seeking to value their trajectory as a group and to reflect on the constitution of an identity permeated by consensus, but also by disputes and disagreements around of its history and of the meanings it has for the plurality of individuals that compose it. It is intended to contribute, with this work, to the production of a public history with the community, expanding the ways of registering, accessing and disseminating their stories and memories.
