The construction of social identity by regionalist literature: the case of Rio Grande do Sul

Resumo: This paper intends to investigate the process of creation and diffusion of regional identity in Rio Grande do Sul, by studying literary and essayistic works published from the last years of 19th Century to 1930. In order to define their cultural specificity, writings by several authors are analyzed, by means of the concept of “identitary check-list”. This concept refers to the typical characteristics of a region or nation, in general related to nature, history, ethnicity, social practices, dialectal expressions and popular culture. Therefore, we examine the relation between regionalism and nationalism in Rio Grande do Sul, emphasizing the rhetorical mechanisms employed to connect the state to the nation, and the ones meant to obliterate possible uncertainties about its belonging to Brazilian culture.

Estudam-se obras de diversos autores, à procura da definição de um projeto literário voltado para dotar o estado de uma particularidade no contexto nacional. Para tal, empregamos o conceito de “check-list identitário”, referente à definição e divulgação de elementos tidos como “típicos” da região, e que incluem símbolos tomados de empréstimo à natureza, à história, à etnicidade, às práticas sociais, à variação linguística, à cultura popular.
