Resumo: This article analyses the text of drama O Jesuíta, by José de Alencar, pointing to the link the author makes between the “pro-independence cause”, a State-Nation project and the Company of Jesus. The play, written in 1861 and performed only in 1875, recreates the political context before the expulsion of Jesuits in 1759, by presenting the main character and the Order as the most able to establish the Nation project in Brazil. With the purpose of explaining the reasons for his failure and all the criticism, we reconstructed and analyzed the context in which the play was conceived and presented to the well-educated political elite in Rio de Janeiro.
