Local history, memories, and disputes in the public space: A reflection about “pioneering” in Toledo-PR, Brazil (1980-2010)

The text discusses the disputes outlined in the public space of Toledo, in state of Parana, about the memories of “pioneering”, referring to the foundation and emancipation of the place, occurred in the 1940s and 1950s. It analyzes how, in more recent times, those memories are used in the debates about the local public administration projects to change the public space. It also discusses some ways how the laborers who migrate to the place at the end of the 20th century – who aren’t considered local “pioneers” – dialogue with these memories. Finally, it concludes that the foundation memories of the place are substantive in the public debate, which is why many people claim public recognition for themselves and their families as “pioneers”, sometimes even questioning the official markers fixed by the city government.
