Imperial domains and local resistance: The implementation of Spanish in the social time of the West Indies

Resumo: The objective of this article is to analyze the installation global processes and the mechanisms used by the Spanish crown to establish the linguistic unit (Castilian) and the local resistances in the West Indian kingdoms. In particular, it discusses the classical hegemonic and imposing function assigned to Spanish, making visible the dynamics of other dominant languages, recognizing glocal processes. As a result, it is concluded that the intended project of a single language was slowed down for centuries, among other factors, by the domains and socio-cultural and linguistic resistance of the new world, forcing the crown to establish multiple strategies and mechanisms to install and legitimize Castilian in the Indies.

En particular, discute sobre la función clásica hegemónica e impositiva asignada al castellano visibilizando las dinámicas de otras lenguas dominantes, reconociendo procesos glocales. Como resultado se concluye que el pretendido proyecto de lengua única fue ralentizado por siglos entre otros factores por los dominios y resistencias socioculturales y lingüísticas del Nuevo Mundo obligando a la Corona a establecer múltiples estrategias y mecanismos para instalar y legitimar el castellano en Indias.O objetivo deste artigo é analisar os processos globais de instalação e os mecanismos utilizados pela coroa espanhola para estabelecer unidade linguística (espanhol) e resistência local nos Reinos das Índias Ocidentais. Em particular, discute a clássica função hegemônica e tributária atribuída ao espanhol, tornando visível a dinâmica de outras línguas dominantes, reconhecendo processos glocais.
