SPECIFICITIES OF DEATH DECLARATIONS FOR NON-EXTERNAL CAUSES ISSUED BY THE MEDICAL-LEGAL INSTITUTES OF BAHIA, 2010 TO 2020

This is a descriptive study, based on the secondary analysis of information available in the Mortality Information System (SIM), period from 2010 to 2020, in the state of Bahia. The objective was to analyze Death Certificates (DC) due to non-external causes issued by the Legal Medical Institutes (IML) of Bahia. Data analysis was performed using Tabwin and Microsoft Office Excel software, through which data were tabulated. Death certificates issued by the State’s IML totaled 159,157, of which 36,196 (≅23%) were due to non-external causes, the majority of which were registered in the city of Salvador, reaching ≅ 22%. The profile of these deaths was of elderly people, whose most prevalent causes were unknown, cardiovascular and respiratory, respectively. Its possible causes are reflections of different origins, such as the absence of a Death Verification Service, aspects of medical training in Brazil and police structure, for example, generating a cascade of inconvenience to the IML, family members ofthe deceased and to the public service. Natural deaths, which should have their DO issued by assistant doctors, substitutes or by the Death Verification Service, have been systematically directed to the IML of Bahia. It is suggested the expansion of the implementation of the Death Verification Service, combined with adjustments in medical education, with regard to the deontological and ethical aspects that contemplate better confluence, for the development of skills, competences and responsibilities, related to the regulations of the professional practice of the doctor, in the different public services that deal with the prescriptive act of death.
