Resumo: Journalism is nowadays an area of crucial importance to understand the notions of health and disease. With this view, we use the Brazilian weekly magazine Veja as empirical object, where we investigated the covers issued from 1968 to 2014, aiming the idea of disease framed by the magazine. In the first instance, we quantitatively examine the coverage related to health issues and general news. Then, we qualitatively deepen the analysis, focusing on the three most reported diseases of the major groups of pathologies: cancer (chronic degenerative), HIV/AIDS (infectious contagious) and depression (mental disorders). Though they belong to distinct groups, chronicity is the main characteristic that brings them closer. Emphasizing the medicalization and chronic care, Veja strengthens the reader’s weight towards self-regulation as a form of control and / or prevention.

Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul2019-04-18info:eu-repo/semantics/articleinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersionapplication/pdfhttps://seer.ufrgs.br/index.php/intexto/article/view/8119310.19132/1807-858320190.76-98Intexto; n.45, maio/ago. 2019; 76-98Intexto; n. 45, maio/ago. 2019; 76-98Intexto; n. 45, maio/ago. 2019; 76-98Intexto; n. 45, maio/ago. 2019; 76-98Intexto; n. 45, maio/ago. 2019; 76-981807-8583reponame:Intexto (Porto Alegre)instname:Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS)instacron:UFRGSporhttps://seer.ufrgs.br/index.php/intexto/article/view/81193/51913Copyright (c) 2019 Luiz Marcelo Robalinho Ferrazhttps://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessRobalinho Ferraz, Luiz Marcelo2023-11-23T15:53:56Zoai:seer.ufrgs.br:article/81193Revistahttp://seer.ufrgs.br/intextoONGhttp://seer.ufrgs.br/intexto/oai||intexto@ufrgs.br1807-85831807-8583opendoar:2023-11-23T15:53:56Intexto (Porto Alegre) - Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS)false
