This study aims to investigate the social and cultural horizons that followed the terrorist attacks of September 11, which established a turning point in contemporary history and have fueled na intense debate in the philosophical and sociological context. The research used the mediatic scenario, TV and in new media, emerged during the attacks and in the subsequent period. Communication reflects, in many aspects, the essence of the dialetic that characterizes an “event”, a concept that has great significance and importance for the September 11 and, at the same time, attests to the impossibility to dissolve it completely into explanatory arguments or according to logicalconsequential categories. This vacuum determined by the event, however, in its being non-sense (not fully explainable), rather than excluding each approach and attempt at understanding, encourages constant queries and, specially, stimulates different types of construction of meaning, often in narrative form; reaching from the obsessive repetition of the same television images for weeks, the attempts at obliterating the trauma or at exploring the alluring potential of the disaster, to the more “progressive” approaches represented by the web.
