Resumo: The present paper, through a short exegesis of the theories on mask and masking process, aimed to re-evaluate the function of the act and of the figure of disguise and mask, reduced today, when not relegated to a technical working tool, to a mere instrument, abstract or concrete, of forgery or deception designed to conceal the true identity of the wearer. The regard of mask as access key to an intimate reality of the subject and a liberation of the self within narrow channels foreshadowed by a society increasingly intent on forging pre-designed templates of identity, can be undertaken by analyzing the psychological significance of the mask, together with anthropological studies that have allowed us to discover its secrets and functions in ancient societies as in contemporary ones. This journey will take us to the Self’s door, in which the mask does not conceal another identity, but open the way to the production of the Persona, allowing the subject to configure himself in the everyday contest of reality, as expression of Being-in-the-World, to allow adaptation and survival, guaranteeing freedom of expression, without getting lost in the anonymity of a death mask, “of which conformism and fashions (idelogical, cultural, social) are the secret guardians”.

Il proposito di maschera della maschera come chiave di accesso a una realtà interiore del soggetto e come una liberazione del sé in stretti canali prefigurati dalla società sempre più impegnato nella formazione di modelli predefiniti di identità, può essere intesa analizzando il significato psicologico della maschera, insieme agli studi antropologici che hanno permesso la scoperta di segreti e le funzioni di questa nelle società antiche, così come nella contemporanea. Questo viaggio ci porterà alla la porta del Sé, in cui la maschera non nasconde un'altra identità, ma apre la strada alla produzione della Persona, permettere il soggetto di porsi al concorso di tutti i giorni della realtà, l’espressione dell'Essere-in-Mondo, per per consentire l'adattamento e la sopravvivenza, garantire la libertà di espressione senza perdersi nell'anonimato di una maschera di morte, "il conformismo e le mode (ideologicos, culturales, sociales), sono i guardiani segreti".Este estudo objetiva, através de uma curta exegese das teorias sobre a máscara e sobre o processo de mascaramento, reavaliar a função do ato e da figura do disfarce e da máscara, reduzida hoje – quando não relegada a um papel de ferramenta de trabalho – a um mero instrumento, abstrato ou concreto, de falsificação ou fraude, concebido para ocultar a verdadeira identidade do usuário. A concepção da máscara como chave de acesso a uma realidade íntima do sujeito e como uma liberação do Eu dentro de canais estreitos anunciados por uma sociedade cada vez mais empenhada na formação de modelos pré- concebidos de identidade, pode ser entendida ao se analisar a importância psicológica da máscara, juntamente com estudos antropológicos que têm permitido a descoberta dos segredos e funções desta em sociedades antigas, assim como em contemporâneas.
