The article identify, feature and discuss aspects that underlie the editorial design activity in contemporaneity considering the introduction of digital and network technologies, convergence processes and multiplatform publication. It is a theoretical and exploratory approach. The topics raised are related to investigations carried out under the Research Group Laboratório de Edição, Cultura e Design (Lead). It is concluded that as the digital design practice consolidates and breaks down into different layers. As computer field's knowledge becomes necessary to implement publications in digital platforms, there is a tension of knowledge and practices that lead to a redesign of professional and academia under the editorial production, particularly the design activity linked to the field. This covers the institutional, editorial and commercial spheres, affecting production and consumption, changing reading practices and communication contracts.
