Three is too much? Problematizing the three-act structure while teaching scriptwriting

Resumo: This article aims to investigate the efficacy and the applicability of the “three-act structure model” - the “paradigm”, according to authors such as Syd Field. We also intend to problematize the influential concept of “the hero's journey” in its occasional combination with the paradigm. In order to do so, the following short films will be closely examined:  Abbas Kiarostami's Le pain et la rue, Álvaro Furlan's Hide and Seek, André Novais's Ghosts  and Gabriel Martins and Maurílio Martins's Contagem. Based on the analyses of these films, we demonstrate that the universal application of the “three-act structure” is more often problematic than it appears to be at a first glance.

Pretendemos também problematizar o influente modelo da “jornada do herói”, de Christopher Vogler, em sua eventual combinatória com o “paradigma”. Para tal, examinaremos os seguintes curtas-metragens: Things that go bump in the night, O pão e o beco, Esconde-esconde, Fantasmas e Contagem.
