Resumo: The work of journalists and historians is provided by the report of sources or witnesses. Such work tries to portray or reconstruct a distant or an immediate past. This article proposes to discuss the relations that are formed with the protagonists of the experience; relations that are full of specificities and capable of shedding some light on the practices of both fields. The testimony is the bearer of the truth and of the fidelity of the representation. Historians live a dilemma between the moral authority of the witness of the past and the rationality demanded by the scientific paradigm and the analytical character of History. On the other hand, journalists themselves have become the guarantors of the source’s accuracy, taking their own moral authority as assurance of the veracity through mechanisms such as the use of a hidden narrator.

Este artículo intenta discutir la relación que se establece con estos protagonistas de la experiencia, llena de particularidades y capaz de iluminar las prácticas de ambos campos. El testimonio es fiador de la verdad y de la fidelidad de la representación. Historiadores viven un dilema entre la autoridad moral del testigo sobre el pasado y la racionalidad exigida por el paradigma científico y por el carácter analítico de la Historia. Por otra parte, periodistas se convierten, ellos mismos, en los avalistas de la fuente, apropiándose de su autoridad moral sobre la realidad a partir de mecanismos como la ocultación del narrador.O trabalho de jornalistas e de historiadores se alimenta do relato de fontes ou de testemunhas, buscando retratar ou reconstruir o passado distante ou imediato. O artigo procura discutir a relação que se estabelece com estes protagonistas da experiência, plena de especificidades e capaz de iluminar as práticas de ambos os campos. O testemunho é fiador da verdade e da fidelidade da representação. Historiadores vivem um dilema entre a autoridade moral da testemunha sobre o passado e a racionalidade exigida pelo paradigma científico e pelo caráter analítico da História.
