Resumo: This article presents an historical approach of the Information Science. It rescues the history of Information Science since its beginning, throughout the world and in Brazil. By showing its evolution and its standards, the text presents the interdisciplinarity of this science. The article presents all concepts raised by the Information Science to prove why it is considered science. It also identifies the field of study of Information Science and its goals, by the point of view of several researchers. In the end, the text presents the contribution of the Information Science to the society.

Resgata a história da Ciência da Informação, desde a sua gênese, no mundo e também no Brasil. Mostra a evolução desta Ciência, com a sua mudança de paradigmas, e aborda o seu caráter interdisciplinar. Levanta os diversos conceitos que a Ciência da Informação instigou ao longo do tempo e constata porque ela é considerada ciência. Identifica o objeto de estudo da Ciência da Informação sob a ótica de diversos pesquisadores e, igualmente, os objetivos, com suas características.
