The Expressionist cinema-city: an analysis of urban dystopias produced by the cinema in the first seven decades of the twentieth century

Resumo: In his essay, we are going to define as “City-Cinema”, in order to get a systematic treatment for the utilized vocabulary, the cities idealized by the Cinema in specifically film productions. The emphasis is directed to the Imaginary Cities produced by the futuristic dystopias presented by the Cinema, in order to examine elements from its architecture, spatiality, social organization, and also searching to perceive its articulation with the film plan. The hypothesis is that the imaginary cities always show the fears, angusties, desires, hopes and demands of the society witch have produced the film. In this way, we apply here the methodological posture that considers the Real and the Imaginary not as separated dimensions, but complementary and inserted in a complex unity. The central example examined is the film Metropolis, by Fritz Lang – maximum realization of the futurist dystopias of Expressionism.

El énfasis está en las ciudades imaginarias producidas por las distopias futuristas en películas de la segunda mitad del siglo XX, emprendiendo-se al examen de elementos de su arquitectura, espacialidad, organización social, y tratando de darse cuenta de su relación con el guión de la película. La hipó- tesis de trabajo que se presenta es que las ciudades imaginarias siempre expresan, de alguna manera, los temores, ansiedades, deseos, esperanzas y demandas de la sociedad que las produce. De esta manera, estamos aquí con un enfoque metodológico que considera que las dimensiones reales e imaginarias no son separables, sino complementarias y, formando una unidad compleja. El ejemplo central es el examen de la película Metrópolis, de Fritz Lang, realización máximo de las distopias futuristas de realización máximo de expresionistas.vocabulário utilizado, as cidades idealizadas pelo Cinema a partir de produções fílmicas específicas. A ênfase recai sobre as cidades imaginárias produzidas pelas distopias futuristas encaminhadas pelo Cinema, examinando elementos de sua arquitetura, espacialidade, organização social, e buscando perceber a sua articulação com o roteiro do filme. A hipótese de trabalho apresentada é a de que as cidades imaginárias sempre expressam, de alguma forma, os medos, angústias, anseios, esperanças ou demandas da sociedade que as produziu. Neste sentido, operacionaliza-se aqui a postura metodológica que considera o real e o imaginário não como dimensões separáveis, mas complementares e constituintes de uma unidade complexa.
